If you find yourself in an emergency abroad (for example, you need to leave and have lost your passport or stolen it), there is no time to apply for a new travel document. In this case, the Consulate can issue an Emergency Travel Document (ETD), which is valid only for your return to Italy (or to the country in which you legally reside). What do you need to have the ETD? To have an ETD issued, you must bring the following documents to the locally authorised Consulate:
Honorary Consulates are not authorised to issue ETDs. They are limited to forwarding applications to the authorised Consulate and acting as the final delivery agent to the applicant, who is also liable for eventual mailing costs. Please remember that you must also report the loss or theft of your passport to the local police to cross the border later. Also, be sure to keep photocopies of your most important documents (passport, identity card, credit card) in a place separate from where you have the originals to facilitate assistance in case of loss or theft. Citizens of European Union Member Countries can be issued an ETD pending formal authorisation by the diplomatic mission or Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the applicant’s home country and upon submission of the following documentation:
