How to Get your Driver's License Translated to Drive in Europe

So you're coming on holiday in Italy and want to drive. Do you know that unless you have an international driving license you need to have your license translated? Let's learn how this works.

Can I have my license translated in the US?

It's actually better to have it translated in Italy, because in the US and in many other countries the procedure to certify a translation is different and only requires a certified translator to stamp the translation and certify its conformity to the original.
If you decide to have it translated in the US, remember to have it apostilled too, otherwise it won't be valid in Italy. If you don't know what an apostille is, just read here.

How long does it take to have my driver's license translated in Italy?

It usually takes a week plus international shipping (or you can choose to have it shipped to the hotel/apartment you'll be staying in, thus saving time and money). 
Also, remember: you need to have the HARD COPY of your translation to show to the police. The soft one is wothless in Italy. So, book this service in advance!

What do I need to have my license translated?

A picture of your license is all I need. 

Another option is the International Driving Permit (IDP). I've been reading information on this on several websites, and it's pretty contradictory. Some say you never need it, some say it's absolutely necessary. Others say you're better off with a translation.
In any case, should you ever have to deal with the police, you need to have either an IDP or a translated license.
