If you are planning to go to Italy for work, study or tourism, do you need a VISA to Italy? What are the rules?
Please be aware that some Anti COVID safety regulations still apply at the Consulate General of Italy. The public is either received by appointment (Schengen visas only) or is asked to send applications by mail (National Visas only).
Visas applications can only be accepted from permanent residents in the jurisdiction of the Consulate, which includes the Provinces of Ontario (except for the city of Ottawa and the Carleton, Dundas, Glengarry, Grenville, Prescott, Russel, and Stormont counties under the jurisdiction of the Italian Embassy in Ottawa), Manitoba and the Northwest Territories.
SCHENGEN VISAS
If you need a short-term stay (90 days or less), you must apply for a SCHENGEN VISA.
A Schengen visa is required to stay in the Schengen territory for up to 90 days within 180 days and allows the visa holder to travel in all 26 European Countries that signed the Schengen Agreement.

If you intend to visit one or more Schengen Countries in a single trip, you must apply for a visa at the Consulate of the Country that is your primary destination (i.e. where you will stay longer).
If you spend an equal amount of time in different countries on your trip, the visa MUST be requested at the Consulate of the Schengen Country port of first entry.
If you need a SCHENGEN VISA from the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto, you must book an appointment through Prenot@Mi.
Prenot@Mi
Please be informed that the online appointment-booking schedule may be complete due to significant volumes of applications. We are working on increasing the availability from August 1, 2022. Check regularly the online system for freed slots after cancellations or non-confirmed bookings or enrol into the Waiting List option that the system will present.
Note: Holders of a blue Canadian Travel Document (convention of July 28, 1951) do not need a visa to enter Italy for transit/or short-term stay (e.g. for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days).
NATIONAL VISAS
If you must stay longer than 90 days in Italy, you need a NATIONAL VISA.
In this case, you do not need ANY online appointment.
Please send all necessary documents (see below), including a money order (consular fee) payable to the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto and a pre-addressed Canada XpressPost envelope or UPS, BY MAIL, to the Visa Office at the shipping address indicated below.
Consulate General of Italy
VISA OFFICE
136 Beverley St.
Toronto M5T 1Y5
Please be aware that the Consulate does not take responsibility for applications, passports or money orders lost by the postal service.
Check what the documents to be included in your mail on the relevant section of this website are. Only complete applications can be processed.
Before mailing a money order for your national visa application, please note the appropriate consular fee in CAD for your type of visa.
Check on the Consulate’s website for the amounts to pay.
We advise taking advantage of the useful guided reference (the visa office may ask for additional documentation/requirements) information for visa applicants (available in various languages, including English) at the official site of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation at the following link:

https://vistoperitalia.esteri.it/home/en

AND explore the more detailed information provided on this website for a specific category of visa, both Schengen and National.

DOCUMENTATION TO BE PRESENTED

The following documents are always required, no matter which kind of visa you apply for:
  • Proof of residence within the Toronto consular jurisdiction area: domestic utility bill or driver’s license (original and a photocopy).
  • Proof of legal residence in Canada: Canadian permanent residence card or visa valid for at least three months after the date of re-entry (original and a photocopy).
  • For travellers not returning to Canada after leaving the Schengen area: relevant visa or travel document authorising entry into the Country of destination and a photocopy.
  • Schengen Visa application form or National Visa application form carefully and correctly completed and signed. Please ensure that you leave no blank spaces. If a question does not apply to you, enter N/A (not applicable).
  • One recent passport-size colour photo (must have been taken less than six months before the application), size 35mm x 40mm, full-face and light-coloured background. The face must be correctly centred and seen from a front view, with both sides visible. Styled poses (looking over one shoulder, head bowed etc.) are not allowed. The leader must be free of all headgear, no hats, scarves, headbands or other decorative objects.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least three months after the visa expiry date, and photocopies of the first two pages of visas previously issued, if any. Furthermore, there must be at least two blank pages in the passport.
