If you want to become an Italian citizen but have questions about the procedure to apply for Italian citizenship, or you have doubts about the process to be followed, let's look at the most frequently asked questions today.

I am married to an Italian citizen, and we live abroad. After how long can I apply for Italian citizenship, and where should I use it?

The foreign spouse of an Italian citizen residing abroad may apply to acquire Italian nationality by marriage three years after the date of the celebration. Half reduces this term in the presence of children born or adopted by both spouses. The applicant must register on the Ministry of the Interior's portal, called ALI, at the following link. Once logged in, you will access the telematic procedure for submitting the citizenship application. The documentation sent online to the diplomatic-consular Representation with territorial jurisdiction over the applicant's residence will be verified to accept the application.

Following acceptance of the application, the user will be summoned for identification, as well as for the verification and acquisition of the originals of the documentation already submitted online and any other necessary documents.

How to find out the status of my application?

The Ministry of the Interior is the competent authority for defining the administrative procedure for granting Italian citizenship.

Once the application has been accepted, an identification code (K10/C - followed by a number) will be assigned by the system, with which it is also possible to access the online consultation service on the status of the application by accessing the ALI portal with the credentials assigned at the time of registration for the submission of the application.

How can I obtain Italian citizenship? My grandparents were Italian
Recognition of Italian citizenship is subject to the interested party, demonstrating that their ancestors in the direct line have maintained and transmitted Italian citizenship without interruption. For more information, please consult the Citizenship page or contact the authority that will have to process the request: if you reside abroad, the Italian Consular Office; if you live in Italy, the Municipality.

How can I obtain the birth certificates of my Italian grandparents?

You must apply directly to the Italian Commune of birth. The application form to the Comune can generally be downloaded from the website of the Italian Consulate, where you submit your application for recognition.

Suppose civil-status registers were not yet used at the time of your ancestor's birth. In that case, you must present the Certificate of Baptism issued by the parish church, with authentication of the parish priest's signature by the competent Episcopal Curia, and a copy of the Municipality's reply certifying that civil-status registers did not exist on that date. List of all addresses of diplomatic and consular representations abroad

I was born in Italy then my parents returned to my country of origin when I was very young. Am I entitled to Italian citizenship or an Italian passport?
No. The Italian law on citizenship (Law 91/1992) does not provide for the acquisition of citizenship by being born on Italian territory. In addition to birth on Italian territory, Article 4 of the law makes the purchase of citizenship conditional on a legal and uninterrupted residence from birth until the attainment of majority.
