What the Sworn Translation of a UK Driving Licence Covers
A UK photocard licence has two parts: the front and the back. Both must be translated in full. A translation of the front only is incomplete.

• Issue date, expiry date, and issuing authority
• Address as recorded on the licence
• All licence categories with their issue and expiry dates

• The reverse side: category descriptions and any additional endorsements

The Motorizzazione checks translations against the original licence. Any field that is present on the original and missing from the translation creates a discrepancy that can cause the application to be rejected or queried.
 
The Broader Picture: Other Documents You May Need
The driving licence conversion process may require more than a translated licence. Depending on the specific procedure, you may also need:

• A sworn translation of your UK birth certificate (for identity purposes)
• A sworn translation of your UK criminal record check (DBS certificate) — required for some commercial licence categories
• Your Italian residency certificate (certificato di residenza) — obtained from your comune
• Medical certificate from an Italian doctor (certificato medico) — required for the Italian licence application

Not all of these require sworn translation — the certificato di residenza is already in Italian, and the medical certificate is issued by an Italian doctor. But the UK documents, if required, will need translation.
 
If You Have Already Converted Your Licence
British nationals who converted their UK licence to an Italian one before Brexit should have no outstanding translation issues for the licence itself. However, if you need to drive in the UK after converting, you will need to check the UK's recognition rules for Italian licences — that is a DVLA question, not an Italian one.
 
Italian Nationals Returning from the UK
Italian nationals who lived in the UK and obtained a UK driving licence face a related but different situation. As Italian citizens, they have the right to Italian residency and are subject to Italian driving licence rules. If they hold a UK licence obtained while resident in the UK, they need to check whether their UK licence can be converted to an Italian one or whether they need to go through the Italian test process.
